Big Ben Chimes 6am and They're Off

The group meet a 5.30am and prepared themselves for the walk ahead.

The group gathered together to seek inspiration
for the walk ahead as the chimes of big ben
signalled the start of the London to Brighton challenge.

Each person had there own motivation for walking Paul shares what it means to him.....

Walking in unity, both mothers walk together to remember their sons. "when Norma said she was going to walk, I knew it was something that I wanted to do with her even if i only managed a mile"

Well done for making it 5 miles
first pit stop at Streatham It was a glorious morning for walk with all the summer rain we have had the hevens were definately shining on us today. With the great sense of community spirit amongst the walkers it meant that the early start on a Saturday morning more bearable.

Lewis aka "planter" a former school friend of Johno's left us on the road to Croydon (9 miles), with one member of the group using the opportunity to fill up on a Mcbreakfast.
that all important sock change at 12 miles -  Paul's face says it all

I think between us Val and I know got to know every petrol station toilet intimately as we stop of to check out the facilities for the walkers. Next time we have decided to sign up as mystery shoppers as by the 15 mile point we had definately perfected the art of toilet inspection.

you have heard of coke break and a lunch break now we have bush break
still going strong only !!!!!!! 34 miles left to go

just past the half way point at 28 miles

The journey was full of highs and lows, with glorious views of the surrounding countryside but hairy moments walking in the dark with cars travelling at speed beside you. The walkers supported and motivated each other to keep going especially through those final miles.
oh so tempting as we walked the last stretch of road.
fish and chips here we come yipee
Bighton and Hove Council obviously knew we were coming and helpfully provided signage showing us the way.
Big thanks to Val our designated driver for the day for ensuring we got there safely.
Well done 54 miles after leaving London the walkers  arrived at the Level in Brighton. It was a long hard slog having been  on the road for more than 17hrs but the walkers finally arrived tired and hungry with blisters on their feet but with a great sense of acheivement.

Thank you to all that have pledged money to the fund

Approximate Route

The Jonathan Hibbert Foundation has planned our biggest event yet to raise funds for this year's tournament. Come and walk with the family from London to Brighton on Saturday 20th September 2008. The JHF is hoping to raise £10,000 from the 87km walk to pay for the additional equipment required to host our biggest tournament yet for the 400+ students that are expected at tournament 2009. The tournament now in its fourth year hopes to build on its previous success to allow more students to compete and showcase their talents. The tournament which started with 137 players in its first year received applications from 300+ students to take part in tournament 2008.

The mammoth of all sponsored walks is open to all participants looking for a real challenge starts at 6am from Big Ben to the footpath parallel to Ditchling Road at 'The Level' in Brighton. If 87km sounds a little too much for you then we are happy for participants to choose a distance more to suited to their age and levels of stamina, as long as you are prepared to raise money for the fund in this unique charity event

Still want to help but can’t make the 20th - Why not support us by, getting sponsored to walk to school, sponsor your teacher to walk around school in fancy dress for a day, ha ha, get together with friends, or walk to work and get sponsored. Walking for charity is brilliant motivation to get fit whilst doing your bit for others and teaches the young the importance of giving.

Training programme

Training will ensure that you are physically prepared and able to complete the challenge safely. It will also greatly contribute to your enjoyment of the event.

Don’t forget that, even if you are accustomed to walking, you will probably not be used to walking for what could be twelve hours plus on uneven ground. You should aim to increase your fitness levels to prepare yourself for this type of challenge.

Medical check-up Before you start on a new training programme, it is always a good idea to consult with your local doctor. You may wish to take your proposed training programme along with you so the doctor knows the level of training you are hoping to carry out

Stretching. Tight muscles hurt and perform less efficiently. They are also more prone to injury. The more you strive to prevent muscle tiredness, the better off you will be. In order to help improve flexibility in your muscles and joints we recommend a thorough warm up prior to walking (in order to warm up for a walk, begin strolling at a more leisurely pace for up to five minutes). Additionally, while walking try to stretch regularly (we recommend five minutes’ stretching for every hour that you walk). Try to make stretching a habit through your training. You will find that it will pay real dividends in the long run..
